Subscribe NowThe Crown Point City Council has approved the action of the Board of Zoning Appeals supporting a special use variance for a proposed micro-hospital and cancer center. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report University of Chicago Medicine wants to construct a 116,000-square-foot facility.
The council voted 7-0 in favor of the project.
The health system says the facility would provide a range of specialty care, including cancer, cardiology, and neurosurgery, and would see 110,000 patients annually.
While most of the project does not require a use variance in a business district, the proposed 15,000-square-foot micro-hospital does constitute a special use
The publication says council member Carol Drasga, who is also a registered nurse, expressed concern about the size of the emergency room.
“It just seems small,” Drasga said.
A representative from UChicago Medicine says the floor plan follows the recommendation of consultants, in terms of size.
The entire project would cover 46 acres, with the initial phase covering 15 acres. Company officials did not have a cost figure.
