Indiana University says it will spend $30 million to create more diverse faculty among its campuses. The school says its seven-year Presidential Diversity Hiring Initiative will focus on groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

IU President Pamela Whitten calls it a critical step.

“Now is the time to provide our students with access to world-class teachers and researchers from multiple perspectives,” said Whitten. “As a university, we have already taken important steps toward greater diversity, and our resolve will now be matched by significant investment.”

IU says not only will it be looking for more diverse backgrounds in open roles, but new faculty positions will be added as well.

The school says it will reallocate resources from non-academic services and external gifts to support the effort.
