Indianapolis-based nonprofit The Mind Trust is hoping to drive solutions to a public school bus driver shortage. The organization has announced the launch of DriveIndySchools, a pilot that will explore collaborative, community-driven answers to transportation problems.

The program will provide financial incentives and support for candidates who are interested in pursuing driver training and qualification in Indianapolis.

“Students and families should have access to safe, reliable transportation options that get them to and from the school that best meets their needs,” said Brandon Brown, chief executive officer of The Mind Trust. “The Mind Trust is excited to see how the DriveIndySchools pilot can help solve current transportation needs and inform potential long-term solutions to impact more students, families, and schools.”

Qualified drivers will receive free training as they pursue a commercial driver’s license. The goal is to have them ready to transport students within 60 days. The drivers would be employees of Indy-based Miller Transportation. Drivers who successful earn a CDL-B permit will receive a $500 bonus. Click here to learn more.
