The farm organization says Indiana families will spend 12% more at the grocery store for their feast than in 2019.
The total basket price is $47.81, including a 16-pound turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, various vegetables, pie makings and miscellaneous ingredients.
Farm Bureau says whole turkeys are going for about $1.34 per pound or $21.44 for a 16-pound bird. Compared to 2019 prices, that is a 31% increase, but actually three cents/pound less than 2018 prices.
While Indiana is a major turkey-producing state, most of the turkey produced in Indiana becomes deli meat or ground turkey.
“Our turkey farmers have been working hard through the pandemic to deliver turkey to our grocery stores,” said Isabella Chism, INFB 2nd vice president. “Whether you purchase a whole turkey this year or even ground turkey or deli meat, you’ll be supporting our turkey producers during an important time of the year for them.”
The annual survey was conducted by volunteer shoppers across the state who collected prices on specific food items from one of their local grocery stores.
Volunteer shoppers are asked to look for the best possible prices, without using promotional coupons or purchase deals.
