IU Board Approves Legislative Capital Request

Subscribe NowThe Indiana University Board of Trustees has approved the university’s legislative capital request for the next biennium. The request features five primary projects, including the creation of a new site for the IU School of Medicine as part of IU Health’s $1.6 billion hospital project in downtown Indianapolis.
The university says the new IU School of Medicine site will feature a 350,000-square-foot facility near the expanded IU Health Methodist Hospital campus. The facility will feature a combination of medical education and research spaces, including classrooms, teaching and research labs, offices, and additional support space.
The university will request $75 million in state funding with the remaining $245 million coming from the IU School of Medicine and private grants.
“The new Academic Health Center will help us recruit top talent and serve as a catalyst between education, research and clinical care,” said Dr. Jay Hess, dean of the IU School of Medicine and executive vice president for university clinical affairs at IU. With our partners at IU Health, I am excited by the possibilities that this new facility will provide our students and physician-scientists.”
The other projects in the request include the $65 million renovation of the School of Public Health in Bloomington, as well as the $25 million fifth phase of the university’s regional campus deferred maintenance plan to provide repairs and renovations of facilities and infrastructure at IU’s campuses in Richmond, Kokomo, Gary, South Bend and New Albany.
IU is also planning for the $20 million renovation of its School of Dentistry building in Indianapolis, and the $50 million construction of of the Multidisciplinary Research/Informatics Science Building IV in Bloomington.
The university says the request also includes submission of its formula repair and rehabilitation plan, which is part of a commitment to maintaining and updating facilities, technology and infrastructure.
“The capital projects in this legislative capital request will greatly assist Indiana University in maintaining and growing our current facilities and infrastructure for long-term needs required by the ever-evolving instructional and research methods of higher education,” Morrison said. “These projects will help us continue to provide the facilities and infrastructure necessary to support cutting-edge education and research in a safe, effective and efficient environment for our students, faculty and staff for generations to come.”
The request will require approval from the Indiana General Assembly in the next legislative session.
