IPA announced the formation of the Mutz Philanthropic Leadership Institute, named for former Lieutenant Governor John Mutz.
Mutz, who is also a past president of Indy-based Lilly Endowment Inc., is credited with convening the first meeting of statewide philanthropic funders which would later become the current IPA.
“I am honored to think that, a hundred years from now, this organization will celebrating, I don’t know how many grants and how much money, but I know they will still be imbued with the spirit of philanthropy,” said Mutz.
In an interview with Inside INdiana Business, IPA Chief Executive Officer Claudia Cumming says the cohort-style learning experience intends to transform the philanthropic sector by developing a talent pipeline of diverse Indiana leaders.
“The launch of the Mutz Philanthropic Leadership Institute is really a way of us honoring our past and our founding while building the bench of talent to move philanthropy in Indiana into the future.”
Now in its 30th year, IPA represents philanthropic organizations, companies, and individuals from all 92 Indiana counties. While not a grant maker, the organization helps its partners to be more effective philanthropists.
Cummings said a statewide listening tour and strategic visioning process revealed a need for a deeper talent bench and education programs.
“We have a robust curriculum that we have put together that centers on kind of all aspects of leading a philanthropic organization,” explained Cummings. “From the nuts and bolts of history of philanthropy and types of philanthropy, to coalition building, communications advocacy.”
Participants may include foundation staff, corporate social responsibility professionals, foundation and nonprofit board members, emerging family foundation members, nonprofit professionals, and individual philanthropists and donors.
Cummings said the launch of the Mutz Institute is a perfect way to celebrate the organization’s 30 years and to honor the legacy of Mutz, who will help create the curriculum and will teach some courses
“He brings insights to the history of philanthropy, some of the strategies in how philanthropies are created, but he also as a vision towards the future,” Cummings added.
The inaugural cohort will begin in January. Applications will be due October 30. Click here to learn more about the Mutz Institute.
