Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton and others held a virtual ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday to officially open the first phase of the Switchyard Apartments. The city says the nearly $1.4 million project provides much-needed affordable housing near Switchyard Park.

The city says five of the eight new affordable apartments will serve households earning 50 to 80% of the area median income or less. Three of the units will be reserved for clients of LifeDesigns, a nonprofit that serves people with disabilities.

South Central Indiana Housing Opportunities developed the apartment building and says the project aims to foster inclusivity and sustainability. Officials say phase I include six 1-bedroom and two 2-bedroom units.

“From the start of the Switchyard Park design process, the City has been committed to developing this land in a way that would amplify quality of life for as many residents as possible,” said Mayor Hamilton.

The city of Bloomington provided land for the project under a 99-year ground lease, $300,000 in HOME Investment Partnership Funds, and a $35,421 grant from the city’s Housing Development Fund.
