The competition was aimed at combining life sciences and data research to find new ways to investigate disease biology and public health outcomes.
The event had innovators investigating a hypothesis designed to improve two Indiana health issues – diabetes and opioid use.
Indiana Poison Center at IU Health won the diabetes challenge and earned a prize of $10,000. Their experiment focused on accidental ingestion of Type II diabetes oral medications, which can cause hypoglycemia in adults and kids. The team will look at exposure rates of unintentional type II diabetes drugs in adults and kids, along with creating outreach programs for community education.
Parkview Health Mirro Center for Research and Innovation’s team won $15,000 for their submission on opioid addiction. The team took publicly available data and opioid crisis variables to find where variables can be used to predict where treatment facilities would be needed in Indiana. The team will also look into the impact of current treatment centers.
“The use of data sets is increasingly important to make new discoveries and protocols in public health settings and to combat Hoosier health issues,” said Darshan Shah, chief data officer, BioCrossroads. “We are eager to see how these two experiments in diabetes and opioid addiction make progress over the coming months, and learning how their outcomes can lead to solutions.”
The teams will share their results at the BioCrossroads’ Indiana Life Sciences Summit on October 7.
