Among them are two manufacturing companies, Kokomo-based Haynes International Inc. (Nasdaq: HAYN) and GDC Inc. in Goshen, which are laying off a total of 685 employees.
Haynes International says its layoffs are “a result of the unforeseen business circumstances that have arisen from the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, along with the sudden and unexpected resulting decline in customer orders in certain operations.” The company employs some 765 workers between its two Kokomo facilities.
Haynes currently expects the layoffs to be temporary, but says “the nature of the situation is very fluid and we will continue to monitor developments using our best business judgment.”
GDC Inc., which manufactures a variety of products and materials for the automotive, agricultural, industrial and recreational markets, says three of its largest customers have temporarily closed their manufacturing facilities due to COVID-19, which resulted in GDC laying off nearly 300 employees at its Goshen and Elkhart plants.
Like Haynes, GDC says it expects the layoffs to be temporary but does not know how long the layoffs will last. “Nonetheless, it is expected that the duration of this layoff will not exceed 6 months.”
Whitestown-based Facility Concepts Inc. says it is temporarily laying off 75 employees. The commercial furniture manufacturer says the move is the result of a downturn and cancelled orders due to COVID-19.
North Carolina-based Driven Brands Inc. says it is laying off 34 employees at six Take 5 Oil Change locations in Lawrenceburg, Crown Point, Valparaiso and Merrillville. The company did not specify whether the layoffs would be temporary or permanent.
LM Corp. Inc., a freight shipping and trucking company in Goshen, says it is laying off 10 employees, though the move is also expected to be temporary.
The company says its “largest customers suddenly and unexpectedly indicated that there would be a temporary decline in their shipping needs as a result of their largest customers announcing that they would be temporarily closing their manufacturing facilities across North America amid the COVID-19 outbreak.”
LM says it doesn’t expect the layoffs to last longer than six months.
