Indiana casinos that were forced to close due to COVID-19 are distributing tons of perishable items to food banks and other nonprofit organizations instead of dumping it.

Horseshoe Hammond Casino donated 30,000 pounds of food to Campagna Academy in Schererville and the Meals on Wheels program.

“We are extremely happy to be able to work with such great partners, quickly getting perishable items to those who can use assistance at this critical moment,” said Dan Nita, regional president for Caesars Entertainment.

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi has donated nine pallets of food totaling 7,450 pounds from its Four Winds Casino locations in South Bend and New Buffalo, Michigan.

The donation includes dairy products, fresh produce, baked goods, and fresh fish.

The perishable products will be distributed by Feeding America and South Bend-based Cultivate Food Rescue.

“Given the recent closure of our casino locations and the uncertainty of the evolving Coronavirus situation, we felt compelled to donate these unused foods items as soon as possible so they could be used by community members in need,” said Matthew Wesaw, Tribal Chairman of the Pokagon Band.

The Indiana Gaming Commission announced last weekend it was ordering a two-week shutdown of the 13 state-regulated gaming facilities.

Four Winds Casino in South Bend, which operates outside of state regulations due to federally recognized sovereignty, closed its four casinos on Tuesday and will remain closed for two weeks.

The casino intends to continue paying its employees during the shutdown.
