Tornos succeeds Bryan Hanson, who is leaving to become CEO of St. Paul, Minnesota-based Health Care Business Group, which will soon spin off from parent 3M.
Zimmer Biomet hired Tornos in 2018 as group president of orthopedics. A year later, he was named group president for global businesses and the Americas. Tornos was promoted to chief operating officer in 2021.
Christopher Begley, who was also named chairman of the board for Zimmer Biomet on Tuesday, said in a news release that Tornos has consistently delivered strong results for the company.
“His deep expertise in the medtech sector, commercial prowess and proven leadership experience make him the ideal leader for Zimmer Biomet as we move into our next phase of innovation and growth,” said Begley.
Hanson has served as CEO of Zimmer Biomet since 2017. During his tenure, Hanson led the spinoff of ZimVie Inc., the company’s former dental and spine business, which was completed in March 2022.
“The last five and a half years at the helm of Zimmer Biomet have been transformational, not just for the Company, but for me, as well,” Hanson said. “I have the utmost confidence in Ivan, the entire ZB team and the strength of the business. I cannot think of a better leader to continue to move the ZB mission forward and deliver value for patients, customers and shareholders.”
Additionally, Zimmer Biomet said Chief Financial Officer Suketu Upadhyay is expanding his role to oversee the company’s global operations and supply chain functions. He joined Zimmer Biomet as CFO in 2019.
