USA is updating production schedules at its facilities, including the Yamaha Marine Precision Propellers plant in Indianapolis. The company says it has furloughed 140 employees and laid off 17 in Indy.
Martin Peters, senior manager of communications and government relations for Yamaha’s U.S. Marine Business Unit, says the Indy facility is not producing propellers at this time.
“As for the furloughs, Yamaha continues to retain the employees and pays their health care coverage. Furloughed workers should apply for unemployment. Some remaining employees who can work from home are doing so,” said Peters.
Yamaha had previously announced that all of its U.S.-based manufacturing subsidiaries would paused production on March 23, a decision that affected the Indianapolis facility and six other plants across the country.
“The well-being of our employees remains a top priority,” said Bob Starr, corporate communications manager for Yamaha Motor Corp. USA. “Each manufacturer is assessing the regional situation daily in order to protect the health and safety of all team members and local communities, while making plans to return to partial or full production.”
As for an update regarding the company’s construction work on the Yamaha Greenfield facility, Peters said, “In compliance with EOs (executive orders) and using appropriate social distancing and PPE, some YPPI staff and vendors are at work in the Greenfield facility, installing equipment and preparing for the start up later this year.”
