When complete, the Wilshaw will feature 90 apartments, a 126-room hotel and 14,000 square feet of retail space.
Plans for the project were originally announced in December 2015. The development, located at 1525 Main Street in Speedway, will also include a first-floor restaurant and meeting space. The town says while there will be dedicated parking for the hotel and apartments, there will also be 55 public parking spots for residents and visitors.
"We are excited about the possibilities the Wilshaw project brings to Speedway," said Town Manager Jacob Blasdel. "The development will be steps away from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, several racing headquarters and corporate offices, and our unique local restaurants and hospitality offerings. Combining that with its easy access to the interstate and downtown Indianapolis, Wilshaw will be an ideal place for travelers to visit and empty nesters and young professionals to live."
As construction begins, the town says it will make temporary public parking lots available to businesses and employees along Main Street.
The project comes in addition to a new Courtyard by Marriott already under construction on the Crawfordsville Road corridor in Speedway. The $12 million project is expected to be complete in the fall of 2018.
