Plans with the town show the site, which includes the abandoned Wrecks Inc. automobile junkyard near I-65, will be redeveloped to include baseball and softball fields, office facilities and additional potential projects like an ice arena, aquatic center and amphitheater.
The town says the investment in the fields and headquarters is expected to total around $5 million and be one piece of a larger green space that will be called Maurer Commons after the family that owned the land for decades. The Little League property, which will be on about 20 acres, will be home to the Little League Baseball Great Lakes and Midwest Region tournaments and the Little League Softball Central Region Tournament, covering two weeks annually. The town says the center will create a $5 million-$10 million annual economic impact.
The Pennsylvania-based parent organization of Little League Baseball and Softball says the complex is slated to be complete in time for the 2020 tournaments. Whitestown was selected after a previous process led to Zionsville, a decision which was later scrapped.
