County commissioners approved a request for proposals document which would allow potential investors to submit plans for the property.
Our partners at WTHI-TV report investors have until October 11 to submit their plans for the site.
"We’ve got so much potential here," said Vigo County Commissioner Brenden Kearns. "What I’m excited about is that we have 60 acres for investors to build on. 60 acres hasn’t been available for sale along the Wabash River within city limits for over 100 years."
The county owns the land, but the TV station reports Kearns is looking for a public-private partnership to turn to the property into something good for the community.
International Paper closed the mill in 2007, impacting 170 workers.
The property is located near the Wabash River. Commissioners said they don’t want to miss an opportunity with potential investors, whether it becomes a music venue or a microbrewery.
