Our partners at WTHI-TV attended a Vigo County Capital Improvement Board meeting Wednesday for a first public look at the firm’s vision for the more than 40-year-old sports and convention facility. Rob Proctor says plans for the redesign include massive glass facades to give the Hulman Center a feeling of transparency that is featured in contemporary design. The video simulation, released by Ratio Architects, shows improved and expanded entryways and event space.
WTHI-TV reports Proctor says "the Hulman Center is the perfect sort of candidate and structure to be the icon (of the city’s downtown). It just needs readdressed and redesigned." He says the project would bring the facility closer to the level and look of more recently-built venues like Lucas Oil Stadium and Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and the Ford Center in Evansville. The proposed work includes additional event space that could hold up to 1150 people.
The General Assembly has already approved the appropriation of half the funding for the project. The other half, which hasn’t been completely lined up yet, is on local entities.
The Hulman Center plays host to concerts, Indiana State University sporting events, performances and large-scale meetings and events.
