The Vawter Recreational Complex is now home to a travel soccer club, meaning hundreds of families filter through the park throughout the week. The park also has a trail and playground.
The new bathroom would provide a needed service for the new influx of park visitors, the town said in its proposal. The bathroom would serve both the indoor sports facility nearby and the park.
“The Town of Vernon is excited to provide this upgrade to our park and community as a whole,” Vernon Mayor Marshall Zamora said in a news release.
If the campaign reaches its goal before March 2, it will receive a matching grant from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority’s CreatINg Places program, totaling at least $48,000 for the project. Three people have donated a total of $650 as of Tuesday afternoon.
The CreatINg Places program is open to not-for-profits and local governments, and eligible projects must have a minimum total development cost of $10,000.
The IHCDA says its projects in the CreatINg Places program have raised more than $8.5 million in public funds and $6.9 million in matching funds since its inception in 2016.
