Evansville-based Deaconess Health System and Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper have acquired the former hospital property, which has been vacant for years.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Our partners at WEHT-TV previously reported that the hospital closed in 2007 after filing for bankruptcy. After a few years, it was transformed into a behavioral health facility, but that business would also close.
The property was sold at a sheriff’s auction in 2023 for $1.35 million, but the buyer was not revealed at that time. Deaconess declined to provide more information on when its acquisition of the hospital took place.
Deaconess said in a news release this week that the property is currently being renovated. When the project is complete, the facility will provide geriatric psychiatric services through a joint venture with Assurance Health, a senior inpatient psychiatric care provider that currently has locations in Indianapolis and Anderson.
The new operation will create about 45 jobs, and Deaconess said no other services are planned for the facility at this time.
“This collaborative project underscores the commitment of Deaconess and Memorial Hospital to enhance health care services and employment opportunities within the communities we serve,” the health systems said in a news release.
The partners said a projected opening date and more information will be forthcoming.
Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center became an affiliate of Deaconess last month.
