The Health Professions Center, where the university’s College of Nursing and Health Professions resides, will get an $18.5 million dollar facelift, including a refreshed interior and equipment to enhance student learning. The school nods toward another round of renovations next year.
Funding stemming from the Indiana General Assembly’s 2019 appropriation to the university is going toward design fees, construction, furniture and equipment.
The renovations began in May and focus on the lower level and part of the first floor. Students, faculty and alumni will notice Mitchell Auditorium on the first floor will become a radiology suite.
The lower level will feature a new clinical simulation center, anatomy lab, student lounge area and a teaching kitchen and food science lab for the Food and Nutrition program.
The dental clinic will also be remodeled and expanded. The clinic will be closed through late August.
“USI is already well-known throughout the region and the state for educational excellence in the College of Nursing and Health Professions, and these renovations will further enhance learning opportunities for students in all of our programs,” USI Vice President for Finance and Administration Steve Bridges said in a news release. “And because the majority of our graduates tend to stay in the Indiana after graduation, USI is helping meet our state’s health care workforce needs and ultimately improve care for all Hoosiers.”
The final phase of the project is expected to start in 2024. The school will use an additional $49 million appropriation from the 2023 budget for the final phase renovations of second-floor office areas and the remainder of the first floor.
