The H2O Project raised $2,800, surpassing its goal, to pay for the drilling of the well.
The well is in northern Haiti near villages identified to have more cholera cases, which can lead to death if dehydrated. Dr. Eugene Maklin, founder and director of New Hope Hospital in Plaine du Nord, Haiti, is a leader guiding the project.
USF says more wells are needed in Haiti, and each one costs about $3,000 to drill. Those interested in donating money toward a future well are encouraged to contact USF Professor of Biology Dr. Amy Obringer.
In 2023, the $1,000 raised during the Lenten season went to the Catholic Relief Services to help after the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey.
