However, the board made a motion that could potentially keep three majors from being cut.
The new plan would eliminate art history, philosophy and religion as majors at the university, though religion would remain as a minor. The board approved a motion to send the majors to Curriculum Committee and the Faculty Senate, which will make recommendations to UE President Christopher Pietruszkiewicz before the board formally considers their removal.
The realignment plan eliminates nearly $1.5 million in future expenses with changes to certain scholarship programs and policies, a move UE says will allow it to remain in Division I.
“It was important for our Trustees to review the current revenues and expenses associated with athletics and consider the best option for UE,” said Pietruszkiewicz. “Looking at the data and taking into account changes in scholarships and room and board policies that make the program nearly breakeven, Trustees concluded that continuing to compete in Division I is the right decision for UE.”
Board of Trustees Chair Linda White said the plan secures UE’s future as a comprehensive university with a strong liberal arts core and provides the financial stability needed to invest in students, faculty, staff, and academic programs.
IIB initially reported on the realignment plan when it was announced by the university in December.
