The American College of Surgeons has verified Union Hospital in Terre Haute as a Level III Trauma Center, making the hospital the first verified trauma center in the area.
Union Health Chief Executive Officer Steve Holman says the planning and work to receive the verification dates back to July 2011. Mark Lynch, trauma medical director for the hospital, says the verification means the care provided by the hospital extends past the Emergency Department.
"The quality of care at every point is monitored. The surgical response, the operating room response, the blood bank resources, the ICU, post-op follow up," said Lynch. "Everything is being specifically reviewed as part of the trauma service."
The verification comes more than a month after Union Hospital celebrated 125 years since its founding in 1892. In July, the hospital was also included in Hospitals and Health Networks magazine’s 2017 "Health Care’s Most Wired" list.
