Unemployment rises in July

Indiana’s unemployment rate increased to 2.6% in July, up from 2.4% the previous month. The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state gained 2,900 private sector jobs last month.
The state’s labor force participation rate also rose slightly to 63.3% in July, remaining higher than the national rate, which ticked down to 62.1%. The labor force, which includes residents who are employed or seeking employment, stands at 3,393,968, which is the highest level since December 2019.
“Hoosiers’ participation rate in the labor force continues to climb, and there remains a wide range of opportunities for individuals looking to resume their careers or begin their search for their next one,” DWD Interim Commissioner Josh Richardson said in written remarks. “Job openings remain high, and employers are ready to add new, ready-to-learn workers and provide the necessary training to get them on their team.”
Indiana’s total private employment stands at 2,767,300. The DWD attributes the new jobs to gains in the trade, transportation and utilities; private educational and health services; and financial activities sectors.
The DWD says the state has 156,813 job openings, while 15,366 Hoosiers received unemployment benefits in July.
The state’s unemployment rate remains below the national rate, which ticked down to 3.5%.
