American Banker magazine is out with its annual ranking of the Best Banks to Work For, and two Indiana institutions made the list. The publication said the ranking was determined based on employee surveys and an evaluation of each bank’s policies and benefits.

The list includes the top 90 banks, and employees measured different areas of workplace satisfaction, including overall engagement, training and development, and work environment.

Merrillville-based Centier Bank is the highest-ranked Hoosier bank on the list at No. 10.

“Centier Bank maintains its culture by hiring those with a servant heart, which is the desire to help and serve others,” Centier CEO Michael Schrage said in a news release. “The bank also promotes its corporate values of caring, loyalty, integrity, friendship, and fun. Centier’s culture is all about caring and serving others for their personal and beneficial well-being.”

Muncie-based First Merchants Bank improved 22 spots from last year to No. 60.

“Our brand is about being more attentive to our employees, customers and community than any other bank,” said CEO Mark Hardwick. “Leading a brand-focused culture became our No. 1 strategic priority, concentrating on attentiveness, inclusivity, teamwork, performance management, career development, rewards and work-life balance. We’ve deliberately strengthened our brand, engaged our teams and improved our culture positioning First Merchants as the best place to work.”

The number of Indiana banks on this year’s list is down from four in 2022. First Internet Bank in Fishers and Horizon Bank in Michigan City did not make the cut in 2023.

The top-ranked banks on this year’s list are Oakworth Capital Bank in Alabama, First Bank Chicago in Illinois, and Montecito Bank & Trust in California.
