Turnstone Secures Olympic-Level Designation

Subscribe NowTurnstone Center for Children & Adults with Disabilities in Fort Wayne has received a long-anticipated designation. The United States Olympic Committee has named the agency and its Allen County athletic facilities the seventh U.S. Paralympic Training Site. Turnstone’s footprint includes the Goalball Center of Excellence and the Plassman Athletic Center at Turnstone, which opened in 2015 as part of the nearly $15 million Turnstone of Tomorrow project.
Turnstone says 19 current and former Paralympic and National Team athletes have trained at Turnstone. The USOC has 18 other training sites throughout the country. Turnstone partners with the United States Association of Blind Athletes and is home of the U.S. Men’s and Women’s Goalball Resident Program and the 2018 U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Goalball teams.
CEO Mike Mushett says the collaboration will open the door for "countless future successes" for northeast Indiana and athletes involved with Turnstone. "The USOC’s ongoing commitment to promoting excellence in the lives of people with Paralympic-eligible impairments, including physical disabilities and visual impairments, and USABA’s focus on directly supporting blind and visually impaired athletes fully aligns with Turnstone’s legacy work of creating possibilities for people with disabilities," he said.
The facilities in Fort Wayne include a dedicated goalball gymnasium, strength and conditioning equipment, multiple basketball courts, indoor track, conference and hospitality space and seating for hundreds of spectators.
