Timeline Announced For UTEC Layoffs

(NYSE: UTX) has announced when the first wave of layoffs will occur at its United Technologies Electronic Controls Inc. manufacturing plant in Huntington. In a notice to the state, UTC says about 75 employees will be out of work when the initial cuts are made.
The company says the first round of layoffs will take place March 8 and will continue through June 30, 2018. In all, 738 employees will be laid off as the company moves its manufacturing operations to Monterrey, Mexico.
Last month, Huntington Mayor Brooks Fetters told Inside INdiana Business "nothing has changed" regarding the UTEC situation following following the announcement that hundreds of jobs at Carrier Corp. in Indianapolis, another UTC subsidiary, were not moving to Mexico as planned.
In July, UTEC announced workers affected by the move are eligible for federal assistance through the Trade Adjustments Assistance Program. Northeast Indiana Works has also set up a website to assist employees with education, training and social services providers who can help those workers transition to new employment opportunities in the region.
The company says while the entire facility is not closing, the layoffs are expected to be permanent. When the announcement of the Mexico move was made, UTEC said it would still maintain a presence in Huntington by keeping its headquarters, engineering and product marketing organizations in the community.
