Developers of The Junction complex say demolition of the JC Penney building will begin next week. Crews have been removing asbestos and staging heavy equipment.
Park Development LLC purchased the property last February.
“The unseasonably warm and dry weather has allowed us to move much faster than we had anticipated,” said a spokesman from Park Development, LLC, the Chicago-based real-estate developer developing the project.
A Hampton Inn will be built on the lot next spring.
The remainder of the existing campus will include 144,000-square feet of retail space. The developer says a former Sears store has been gutted and is being converted into a Planet Fitness. The owner hopes to open the gym before spring.
The developer says it has already signed Dunham Sports and Dollar Tree to the project.
