‘Teacher of the Year’ Finalists Named

The Indiana Department of Education has announced the finalists for the 2018 Teacher of the Year Award. The 10 finalists were chosen from a pool of applicants and screened by a selection committee.

The committee is comprised of former Teacher of the Year winners, IDOE staff, educational organization leaders, business and community leaders, and higher education representatives. The IDOE says the goal of the Teacher of the Year program is to "inspire, rejuvenate, and celebrate the teaching profession."

The finalists include (Name, School, District):

• Lisa Eck, Arlington Elementary School, Franklin Township Community School Corp.
• Julie Oelschlager, Hamilton Heights High School, Hamilton Heights School Corp.
• Kathleen Rauth, Center for Inquiry at School 27, Indianapolis Public Schools
• Jerome Flewelling, Crown Point High School, Crown Point Community School Corp.
• Kristin Baker, Elkhart Central High School, Elkhart Community Schools
• Heidi Hisrich, Richmond High School, Richmond Community Schools
• Amanda Graham-Bishop, Frankfort High School, Community Schools of Frankfort
• Dan Baker, Huntington North High School, Huntington Community School Corp.
• Kathleen Sarles, Franklin Community High School, Franklin Community School Corp.
• Lena Darnay, Pike High School, MSD of Pike Township

"Our students succeed because of exceptional instruction in the classroom," said Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick. "This list of educators is comprised of  the best of the best across Indiana, and I am grateful for the dedication and hard work they show each and every day. Our teachers deserve all the support and recognition they can receive and I am happy to honor them through our Teacher of the Year program."

The winner will be announced in October and will be Indiana’s representative for the National Teacher of the Year Award.
