The Indiana Legislative Council has announced study committee topics resulting from the 2014 session of the General Assembly. The panels will examine subjects including early childhood education and digital privacy. You can find details on the study committees by clicking here.

Statehouse — The Legislative Council met today to assign topics for the legislature to study during the 2014 interim. Chaired by House Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis), the council assigned topics as well as new interim committees that will examine particular issues that needed to be further studied after the 2014 legislative session.

“Every year the Legislative Council determines which issues the General Assembly should study further prior to making additional changes to our state's policies. It's prudent to take a thoughtful approach and further study certain issues in order to make better informed decisions on legislation for next session,” said Speaker Bosma.

The interim committees will lay the groundwork for much of the legislation to come before the General Assembly during the 2015 legislative session. Early childhood education, digital privacy and the underreporting of crimes against children are some of the issues that will be addressed by the committees.

During the 2014 session, Speaker Bosma sponsored Senate Enrolled Act 80, which streamlined the interim committee process. The new structure reduces government bureaucracy by allowing study committees to operate more efficiently and increasing member participation.

“As I have always said, the committees serve as the work horses of the institution. I look forward to seeing the recommendations that come from these study committees,” said Speaker Bosma.

The Legislative Council is composed of twelve voting members, with six appointed from the Senate by the Chairman of the Council, and six appointed members from the House by the Vice-Chairman of the Council.
