The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says private sector employment increased by 4,300 in March, compared to the previous month. The trade, transportation and utilities and construction sectors added a combined 3,700 jobs in March, while the leisure and hospitality and financial activities sectors shed a total of 500. The national unemployment rate is 4.1 percent and the DWD says Indiana’s rate has been lower for over four years.
The state’s labor force has a net increase of more than 7,500 month-over-month and its 63.8 percent labor force participation rate is slightly higher than the 62.9 percent national average. Indiana’s private employment total is 14,000 higher than peak in December and now stands at more than 2.7 million.
Indiana is tied with Minnesota for the second-lowest unemployment rate in the Midwest, behind Wisconsin at 2.9 percent. Kentucky is fourth-lowest at 4 percent, followed by Ohio at 4.4 percent, Illinois at 4.6 percent and Michigan at 4.7 percent.
