Eric Holcomb and the Indiana Department of Transportation announced this week, starting Sunday, is Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana.
The state is sounding yearly reminders about staying safe during the upcoming winter season, such as what to keep in your car and driving tips.
INDOT recommends keeping food, water, a phone charger, sand or cat litter, flares or bright LED alternatives, a flashlight, blankets, a snow scraper, jumper cables, first aid supplies and a full gas tank. It also says to never tailgate or drive beside a snow plow since its driver has limited visibility and to slow down when travel conditions worsen.
In an attempt to mitigate bad weather, the state said it plans to pre-treat roads with salt brine along with typical cold weather treatment. However, roads can’t always be reached for immediate service since snow plow routes take two-to-three hours and road salt takes longer to activate in colder temperatures.
