The Driven2SaveLives campaign will include signage, videos and social media at IMS events. In an interview with Inside INdiana Business, IMS President Doug Boles and Indiana Donor Network Chief Executive Officer Kellie Hanner said the campaign builds on the legacies of drivers Justin Wilson and Bryan Clauson, who saved lives as organ donors following fatal crashes.
Wilson died in August 2015 from injuries he sustained in a race crash. The Indiana Donor Network says he saved five lives as a donor. Clauson died in August 2016 after a race accident. The organization says he also saved five lives as an organ donor, and continues to benefit others as a tissue donor.
Indiana Donor Network and IndyCar driver Stefan Wilson, Justin Wilson’s brother, launched Driven2SaveLives in April 2016 Clauson’s family joined the effort after his fatal crash, looking to help spread donation awareness more broadly throughout motorsports.
"We see this as a great opportunity to reach fans who visit the Racing Capital of the World throughout the year," says Hulman & Co. Chief Executive Officer Mark Miles, "informing them about the need for registered donors across Indiana and the United States."
The speedway and Indiana Donor Network will begin the joint effort this weekend at the INDYCAR Grand Prix. It will run through at least next year’s Indianapolis 500.
