(Monon South Trailhead rendering provided by Radius Indiana campaign)

Two Indiana communities are launching crowdfunding campaigns to bring active opportunities to Hoosiers.

A local pickleball club in Vincennes seeks to raise $50,000 to restore local courts and facilitate events. Meanwhile, southern Indiana economic development organization Radius Indiana seeks to raise $25,000 for a trailhead projects along the proposed Monon South Trail in Salem.

Both projects are participating in the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority’s CreatINg Places program, which will match donations collected through the online crowdfunding platform Patronicity.

Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum said in a news release that pickleball has become one of the most popular recreational activities offered in the city’s parks.

“People of all ages are enjoying open play and planned events,” Yochum said. “The pickleball courts provide a needed space to reconvene as a community after the pandemic. The restoration of the courts will allow for this community camaraderie to continue for years to come.”

The courts the Vincennes Pickleball Club seeks to restore are in the city’s Gregg Park. The club has until Dec. 29 to meet its fundraising deadline. More information about the organization’s online campaign is available by clicking here.

Meanwhile, Radius Indiana is working under a shorter deadline to raise funds for its proposed trailhead project. The Salem community fundraiser is open through Nov. 25. Organizers there plan to restore a boxcar at the trailhead that sits two blocks from the Salem Courthouse Square.

“CreatINg Places is helping us bring an incredible opportunity back to life, and we are very excited to carry out this project, restoring an original and very unique L&N 40 boxcar,” Radius Indiana President and CEO Jeff Quyle said in a news release. “This project will create a memorable tourism asset in Salem and will anchor a downtown trailhead the Salem community can cherish.”

Plans for the Monon South Trail were first announced in January during Gov. Eric Holcomb’s State of the State address. When complete, the trail would create longest contiguous, multi-use trail in the state, spanning 62.3 miles through Clark, Floyd, Washington, Orange and Lawrence counties.
