South Bend Schools Superintendent to Retire

Superintendent Dr. Carole Schmidt announced Monday she will retire from her position at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. Schmidt has served as superintendent for over four years.
Schmidt began serving as interim superintendent in July 2011. She was named Superintendent of the South Bend Community School Corporation four months later.
"During the past four years that I’ve had the pleasure of serving as superintendent of the South Bend Community School Corporation, I have witnessed many dedicated teachers and parents, and served with a staff that truly cares about providing quality learning for every student every day," said Schmidt. "I have been blessed to have spent my entire career in public education and will continue to be a champion for it in the next phase of my personal and professional life.”
In her time as superintendent, Schmidt opened preschools in five primary centers, developed a two-hour delay protocol, provided extensive professional development for staff, expanded the Montessori magnet program to grade six, created a teacher evaluation instrument and implemented a strategic plan for the corporation.
Schmidt did not elaborate on her plans following her retirement.
