The vacant and abandoned houses were repaired or demolished.
“This is about making our neighborhoods stronger. When a house is collapsing next to you, your home loses value and your quality of life suffers. Fixing or removing these houses was the top priority I heard about campaigning four years ago, and I’m proud of the team for getting the job done. Now we turn our attention to prevention and long-term neighborhood growth,” Mayor Buttigieg said.
The city partnered with the Urban Enterprise Association, the South Bend Heritage Foundation, the Near Northwest Neighborhood Inc., Indiana Michigan Power, NIPSCO and local residents. Mayor Buttigieg announced the effort back in February 2013. The city says it finished the work about two months ahead of schedule.
