The RDC said Monday the 50,400-square-foot building could be expanded to 200,000 square feet to accommodate the growth of a future tenant.
The building will be located near the $600 million Heidelberg Materials cement plant that opened in June.
“Mitchell is very pleased to see this new building planned for our industrial park,” Mitchell Mayor Nathan Jenkins said in a news release. “The Heidelberg construction project has significantly increased the production capacity at that plant, and now this new building is a second sign of business growth for our community and should be a catalyst for more investment and jobs to come.”
The shell building is being financed with proceeds from the RDC’s Tax Increment Finance district that was created to help with the Heidelberg project.
RDC member and Lawrence County Commissioner Wally Branham said the shell building was the RDC’s first priority.
“Because of the Heidelberg plant’s generations-old presence in the Mitchell community, we knew we wanted to partner with the city to increase the value of Heidelberg’s investment,” Branham said. “We strongly expect that this building will bring new jobs to our County and the Mitchell community, giving our residents another employment opportunity.”
The project is being built on a 14-acre site in the industrial park. It is being developed in partnership with GM Development Companies, based in the Henry County town of Springport. Shelbyville-based Runnebohm Construction is overseeing construction.
Construction is slated to begin this fall and be complete by the summer of 2024.
