The school says the program blends applied math, biology and computer analysis and prepare students for careers in government laboratories, research hospitals and product development companies.
The school says the demand for biomathematicians is growing. It cites numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggesting that, between 2010 and 20210, the employment rate for biomathematics will increase by 17 percent, with jobs paying an average starting salary of nearly $73,000.
Mathematics Professor Allen Holder says the program is mainly designed for students looking to earn a post-graduate degree in the area. However, he says the potential exists for graduates to go directly into professions including mathematicians, pharmaceutical researchers or human geneticists.
