The contract calls for work related to the USS Jack H. Lucas, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer in the U.S. Navy fleet, some of which will be performed by Rolls-Royce in Indianapolis.
The award is for three generator sets, or gensets, which provide electrical power for the ship and are produced in Indianapolis. The gensets use a specific gas turbine, which a spokesperson for Rolls-Royce says is derived from the engine that powers the C-130 Hercules aircraft.
Rolls-Royce will be responsible for about 20 percent of the contracted work, all of which is expected to be complete by July 2022. Other work for the contract will be performed in Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Missouri, New York and Louisiana. The Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington D.C. is the contracting activity.
The USS Jack H. Lucas is named after a former member of the U.S. Marine Corps who received the Medal of Honor at age 17 for his heroic actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.
