While no Indiana hospital was ranked in the overall top ten list nationally, Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health did score high in two specialties.
The Indianapolis-based hospital is ranked No. 3 in the nation for pediatric urology care which the publication says represents prevention of surgical complication and infections from urinary catheters and treatment of testicular torsion.
The hospital is ranked No. 5 in the nation for pediatric cardiology and heart surgeries. U.S. News says the ranking in cardiac care is based on survival after complex heart surgery, such as heart transplants and corrective surgery for congenital heart defects.
This year, the publication also conducted a regional ranking of hospitals. Riley at IU Health is ranked No. 7 among the 21 hospitals specializing in pediatric care in the eight Midwestern states.
“Our team of clinicians at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health is the best in the business,” said Dr. Elaine Cox, chief medical officer of Riley Children’s Health. “I witness their compassion and expertise every day. The affirmation from U.S. News after a year of uncertainty is the best reason to celebrate. We celebrate with our patients and families.”
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is ranked first in the Midwest, followed by Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. There was a four-way tie for third place, followed by Riley.
Overall, Boston Children’s Hospital was number 1 in the nation.
“When choosing a hospital for a sick child, many parents want specialized expertise, convenience and caring medical professionals,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings have always highlighted hospitals that excel in specialized care. Now, this year’s new state and regional rankings can help families identify conveniently located hospitals capable of meeting their child’s needs. As the pandemic continues to affect travel, finding high-quality care close to home has never been more important.”
Riley also received top 25 rankings in multiple categories, diabetes care, neonatology and pulmonology.
