The opening of the Larry Bird Museum, located at the Terre Haute Convention Center, follows several years of delays.
Plans for the museum were first announced by the Vigo County Capital Improvement Board in 2018. However, while the convention center opened in April 2022, the museum project saw its work pushed back due to pandemic-related construction delays.
The museum features a variety of exhibits showcasing Bird’s Indiana heritage, his impact on Indiana State University athletics, and his contributions to the Terre Haute community.
As part of the grand opening festivities, the city will host a street fair known as Hoops Fest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wabash Avenue between Seventh and Ninth Streets.
The ribbon cutting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. with local officials and special guests in attendance, including Larry Bird himself.
After the grand opening festivities are concluded, the museum will be open for private VIP tours throughout the day. The public opening will take place on Friday.
Visitors are required to reserve a time slot in advance on the museum’s recently launched website.
