Our partners at WPTA-TV report preliminary construction has already begun at the site.
The campus would be located on a 137-acre site off Lower Huntington Road just west of I-69.
In January, the Allen County Plan Commission approved the rezoning proposal with seven of the eight members voting in favor. Nelson Peters, who also serves on the board of commissioners, abstained from that vote, but gave his approval during the commissioners’ vote on Friday.
Some area residents have opposed the project, citing concerns about flooding and other environmental issues such as disruptions to animal populations. They also expressed concerns about noise from helicopters and ambulances.
However, supports say the project will bring more healthcare options to northeast Indiana.
“[We] hope that once this project is developed, the immediate community will see what a benefit this is,” IU Health attorney Andy Boxberger told WPTA.
Boxberger says the health system plans to do more research on the environmental concerns brought up by residents, though a timetable for that study’s completion was not given.
