IU says Paul O’Neill passed away Saturday in Pittsburgh. He was 84.
O’Neill earned his Master of Public Administration degree from Indiana University in 1966. The following year, he joined the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.
From January 2001 to December 2002, O’Neill served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President George W. Bush.
In 2019, O’Neill and wife gave IU a $30 million gift to provide student scholarships, faculty fellowships and a new Center on Leadership in Public Service.
IU renamed the center the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. It was formally dedicated in September 2019.
During his time in the private sector, O’Neill served as chairman and chief executive officer of Alcoa, president of International Paper Co., and chairman of the RAND Corp.
