Reid Health Verified as Trauma Center

The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma has verified Reid Health as a Level III Trauma Center, making the hospital the 10th of its kind in the state.
Reid Health says the designation is the result of more than three years of work. The hospital says the verification "recognizes a center’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients."
Hospitals must meet certain criteria in order to receive a trauma center verification. Ryan Williams, trauma program manager and EMS coordinator at Red Health, says the American College of Surgeons requires a full year of data as part of their review.
Reid says the committee evaluates every aspect of patient care at the hospital, including what happens before and at the moment the patient arrives to the emergency room and how they progress to other areas such as surgery, critical care or transfer to other facilities.
"Voluntarily seeking out and going through this verification process is a way to keep us on track in always striving for excellence in care for every patient who comes through our doors with injuries," said Jamie Brummett, emergency physician and trauma liaison for the department. "This means we are prepared as a team to take on complex traumas through standardized protocols. We have worked very hard to educate all staff to improve patient care from the ED to the floors."
Last week, Union Hospital in Terre Haute received the same designation. In all, there are 18 hospitals in Indiana that have received Level I, II, or III verification.
