The city said it is conducting a regional capital campaign and working to secure various grants to help fund the project.
The project is being done in collaboration with the National Guard and Memorial Hospital. The 91,000-square-foot facility will be built adjacent to the Indiana National Guard building at 15th and Barley Streets in Jasper.
The building will feature an 8,000-square-foot fitness center, four full-court gymnasiums, a 14,000-square-foot indoor aquatic center, indoor elevated walking track, four group exercise studios, and five community rooms, including a community kitchen.
“Our vision extends beyond the facilities and amenities themselves,” Jasper Mayor Dean Vonderheide said in a news release. “We imagine a community hub of activity, a gathering space, a destination to meet the health, wellness, and recreation needs of our community in one location.”
The mayor said the programming at the facility will serve residents of all ages and abilities.
The Jasper City Council is expected to pass legislation to begin collecting a 1% Food and Beverage Tax, which was approved by the state legislature earlier this year.
The city said the tax would support the project and minimize the impact on property taxes. Additionally, the city has identified other potential funding sources, and said it expects to provide projected financing models in the coming weeks.
A potential timeline for the facility’s construction was not provided.
