Through a partnership with Lafayette-based People’s Brewing Co., the school’s dining and catering department will open the 1869 Tap Room in the Purdue Memorial Union.
It will be open Thursday and Friday nights, as well as on football home game days and offer three People’s beers, plus house wines and appetizer’s from nearby Pappy’s Sweet Shop. When beer is not being served in the space, it will revert to its current branding and use as "The Bean Cellar." During tap room hours, it will only be open to guests and students 21 and older.
Memorial Union Director Bob Mindrum says "this will be a comfortable spot where faculty and staff can meet at the end of the workday, where Union Club Hotel patrons can relax after concluding their business on campus, and where alumni and other Boilermaker fans can gather to watch televised home football games. It is also a great way to feature a local business, owned by Purdue alum Chris Johnson, and give visitors the opportunity to sample offerings from People’s Brewery."
Purdue says the tap room will eventually include displays highlighting fermentation science and hop research from the school. People’s has tapped into Purdue’s brewing know-how in the past, collaborating with researchers and specialists, as well as using hop varieties studied by the university.
