The rankings are based on criteria such as the number of published articles in scholarly journals and the number of patent applications granted.
Purdue is ranked at number 50 on the list, followed by IU at 54. Both universities fell from their rankings the previous year at numbers 32 and 27, respectively.
To produce the list, Reuters identified institutions throughout the world with the most articles published in scholarly journals from 2011 to 2016. The list was then narrowed by cross-referencing the number of patents filed by each institution during the same time. Other criteria involved in the ranking include how often patents cited research papers and the percentage of articles that featured an industry co-author, according to IU.
Stanford University tops the 2018 list, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Washington. You can view the full list by clicking here and connect to the methodology behind the list by clicking here.
