Purdue was ranked at number 32 on the list while IU was ranked 49th. Reuters says the evaluation process began by identifying 500 institutions that published the most articles in scholarly journals from 2008 to 2013, then cross-referencing that list with the number of patents filed by each institution during the same period.
Each institution was then evaluated by how often its patent applications were granted, how many patents were filed with global offices and local authorities and how often the patents were cited by others. The institutions were also evaluated on how often their research papers were cited by patents and the percentage of articles that featured a co-author from industry.
"To be recognized as one of the world’s most innovative universities is a tribute to IU’s faculty, students and staff, as well as our ability to take cutting-edge research and translate it into commercially viable technologies," said Bill Stephan, vice president of engagement for Indiana University. "It also reflects the strong commitment IU holds as a unique and vital contributor to the state’s economic vitality. Along with serving fellow Hoosiers, such impact resonates on a regional, national and even global scale, as the Reuters rankings demonstrate."
Reuters says the universities on the list get "to the essence of what it means to be truly innovative; the institutions recognized here most reliably produce original research, create useful technology, and have the greatest economic impact."
The top five institutions on the list are Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, the University of Washington and the University of Michigan.
