The new funding for the patent-pending products comes from the Trask Innovation Fund, managed by the Purdue Research Foundation Office of Technology Commercialization.
The three recipients are researchers either in the university’s Bindley Bioscience Center or the College of Engineering and could have received up to $50,000 for their short-term project.
“The path to deliver an academic discovery to the marketplace can take a long time to travel because of the many challenges involved,” said Abhijit Karve, the fund office’s director of business development.
The projects include a cost efficient freeze-drying storage process for pharmaceuticals, a method to test beef to find out what feed was provided to the cattle, and an autonomous navigation agent using ambient heat radiation signals for perception.
The fund hopes to move the projects past “the valley of death” for an easier transition into commercialization. The money can be used to build prototypes and conduct further research.
