The report ranks more than 4,500 public and private universities based on fall semester enrollment and optional practical training data from the 2022-23 academic year.
Purdue is ranked No. 8 among all universities, up one spot from last year. Among only public universities in the U.S., Purdue is No. 3.
“Purdue is an attractive choice for international students,” Heidi Arola, assistant vice president for global partnerships and programs, said in a news release. “They bring so much to our community, and their presence brings the world to Purdue, helping all our Boilermakers gain global competencies necessary to succeed in today’s workforce.”
International students make up 18.6% of the total number of students enrolled at Purdue. The university said India surpassed China last year for the highest number of students at Purdue, with 2,698 and 2,359 students, respectively.
Arola said international students and their families also have a positive impact on Indiana’s economy. The university cites data from NAFSA: Association of International Educators, which said that students and their families at the West Lafayette campus generated $340 million in economic impact and supported nearly 3,400 jobs.
The Open Doors report also ranks Purdue No. 24 among all U.S. doctoral institutions, with 1,351 U.S. students studying internationally for credit in 2021-22.
The list of U.S. institutions hosting international students is topped by New York University, followed by Northeastern University – Boston, Columbia University, Arizona State University – Campus Immersion, and the University of Southern California.
