The department said in a public notice that it is holding the April 25 public hearing on the Part 70 Operating Permit renewal request for U.S. Steel’s largest manufacturing plant in Gary because of several comments the department has received.
The group Gary Advocates for Responsible Government in a March 26 Facebook post is encouraging residents to make their concerns known about U.S. Steel’s Gary Works plant. The group is urging the steel manufacturer and the state regulatory agency to not just meet the “letter of the law” but “do better.”
The public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. April 25 in the gymnasium of 21st Century Charter School of Gary, 556 Washington St. Written comments also will be accepted until the end of the public comment period, April 29.
Following public comment, IDEM will either renew or deny the permit. If the renewal is issued, the public notice said, it may be different from the draft permit because of public comments received.
